The Truth About Gluten

Gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, gluten allergy, and Celiac disease. These are all quite different from one another, however these terms are unfortunately too often used interchangeably both within the medical community as well as the community of the gluten intolerant/sensitive/allergic/or Celiacs.
Watch this video by Dr. Peter Osborne of Town Center Wellness to see a concise, honest, up to date review of what gluten is, where it is found, the range of effects, and the relation to and differences between gluten: intolerance, sensitivity, allergy and Celiac. Knowledge is power and this is some powerful information.
See what else Dr. O has to say on gluten here.
We must put pressure on our government, the FDA, medical community, and the food industry to bring awareness to the widespread and common negative impact gluten is having on our society and our health. We must work to educate ourselves and then our communities so that families can possibly figure out the source of their malady ~ many illnesses people have are directly linked to gluten.
It’s all quite simple really. The human body was not designed to process and metabolize the gluten protein. As such, when it is introduced to the system it is seen as a foreign object and the body tries to rid itself of it by attacking and/or flushing it out. Many say that people with gluten intolerance, sensitivity, or Celiac are sick or have a disease. I don’t look at it that way. Our bodies are actually functioning exactly how they were designed to ~ it sees the gluten as a kind of poison, so to speak. And it goes into action. And I like to tell myself that the people out there who don’t have outward symptoms are the one’s who have the disorder, because their body is not alerting them to a problem. Just a bit of positive reassurance I like to give myself when I’m feeling a bit ‘isolated’.

SO, I’M GOING TO TRY SOME PREMADE GLUTEN FREE HAMBURGER BUNS
I’m not just a lazy gluten intolerant, I also happen to be ‘financially challenged’ at the present moment, so I am always looking to find great deals on gluten free food. That can be hard just by itself, but to be able to find good tasting pre-made gluten free breads???? Oh my, it can be impossible to find great tasting gluten free bread anything. So, I’m lazy, broke and picky ~ and gluten intolerant. What a wonderful and frustrating combination. But if you are like me, you can follow me along on my gluten free experiments and we can learn together.
Well, today I decided to embark on a new, kinda scary, adventure. I’ve been working real hard at learning the best ways to save and strecth the almighty dollar here in our home, and I’ve learned that shopping for some everyday things online can be very cost effective. I had signed up for the free trial of amazon prime and before the trial ran out I had successfully saved that much in free shipping, and honestly it was by mistake that I didn’t cancel it before the trial ran out…I surely did not think I had that money to lose. But, like Murphy’s law always is, it was the DAY I was logging on to cancel the membership that the payment had processed through my credit card. Darnit!!!! Well, actually I used a more colorful word I’m sure.
So, I figured I might as well get my money’s worth now that I’m stuck with the prime membership for a year. So, I decided that since I can’t get decent gluten free bread in my local grocery store, and it costs over $5 and a half dollars to make a loaf from a bagged mix, I would order something gluten free online from amazon. I scrolled through until I got to the gluten free hamburgers and read the reviews on the Ener-G Tapioca Hamburger buns – not good. Most all of them said they would not buy them again and that they were too dry and crumbly without the taste of a real hamburger bun. There was only one review for the Ener-G Seattle Hamburger bun, but it was an excellent review. The reviewer said they were very tasty and reminded him of a regular wheat bun. I ordered them through the ‘Subscribe and Save’ program, which you can check out here if you like. (I’m not going to pitch it here, it just saved me a few bucks, research it yourself though, don’t take my word for it).
I should get the buns in about two days. Me and my girl will grill tasty turkey burgers on some type of grilled potato recipe or another. Check back on Saturday to get our rock solid review of how these little guys taste!
